Apple evolves iPod line, introduces direct downloads

ipod lineupWhat has made Apple’s iPod so difficult for competitors to beat over the past few years is vision and product planning. Today we saw both in action as Apple completely revamped its market-leading line of music and video entertainment devices, just in time for the 2007 holiday.

From the beginning Apple has carefully orchestrated the iPod’s ecosystem, evolving the hardware, software, and online presence carefully as technology has improved and consumers have gotten more comfortable living a digital lifestyle. It’s almost as if the past five years has led to this moment — Apple’s most evolved iPod ecosystem to date.

At “The Beat Goes On” event in San Francisco, Apple’s Steve Jobs presented a clearly-defined line of iPods, including the new iPod Touch, and introduced capability that iPod owners have been clamoring for — the ability to download music from the Internet directly into their devices. This is now possible on the iPod Touch and the iPhone through the new iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store.

Palm Foleo – dead on arrival

I certainly didn’t see this one coming.

Palm have scrapped the launch of the company’s “mobile companion”, the Palm Foleo. Announced at this year’s D: Conference, the device was touted as a brand new product category in itself — a note-pad-sized laptop, designed specifically to dynamically sync with and compliment the computing power of a smart-phone.

The problem that Palm was attempting to solve with the Foleo, is that no matter how powerful cell phones have become, there are times when a larger screen and proper keyboard makes more sense — such as composing emails, editing a spreadsheet, or using web apps. To which Foleo critics replied: “that’s why we have laptops”.

For now at least, we won’t get to find out if there is room in the market for a device that sits somewhere between a smartphone/PDA and a fully fledged laptop.

PayForIt, Google's Gpay suggest mobile e-commerce is hot

pay for itTwo recent activities — the start of PayForIt in the U.K. and Google’s patent application for Gpay — suggest that mobile e-commerce is hot again.

The promise of paying for goods and services with a cell phone, both online and in the real world, has been around for years, especially in Japan and South Korea. But the cell-phone-as-a-digital-wallet concept just hasn’t taken off in the U.K., the U.S., and many other countries for a variety of reasons — paying by a cell phone still remains a clunky user experience and issues of trust and security are just two concerns.

That may be about to change.

Lots of consumer electronics devices connect to a PC via a USB connection, such as mp3 players, flash drives, digital cameras and mobile phones, and the amount and range of information that they can carry is astounding — gigabytes of music, video, photos and documents. Some of these can contain important information, such as personal details or business secrets, while others may just be of sentimental value and of little interest to anyone else. In either case, losing one of these devices, be it from theft or misplacement, is at best a nuisance, and at worst can be a disaster.

GadgetTrak have developed a software system that can be installed onto supported USB devices, which they claim provides a means of tracking those devices, in the event that they are lost or stolen. Various membership options are offered, starting at $12.95 for one device, increasing to $45.95 for up to twenty devices.

The Gphone is coming; how Google could rewrite the rules

If done right, the Gphone and not the iPhone will be the one to change the face of the wireless industry.

Apple’s iPhone, at least in its initial release, has not upended the wireless industry, particularly in the United States, as much as hoped. The iPhone certainly has pushed the cell phone envelope a bit further, and it hints at what’s to come, but so far the iPhone is still playing by the rules.

Google, if it enters the fray as expected with its so-called Gphone, may truly rewrite the rules. What it plans to do is an ongoing topic of discussion and speculation on the Internet, not unlike Apple’s plans for the iPhone before its release at the end of June. The Gphone may be announced as early as next week and may debut as early as the first quarter of 2008. The anticipation will be as fervent as it was for the iPhone, without the Steve Jobs showmanship.

Nokia announces online music store – takes aim at Apple and mobile carriers

Nokia OVi music store ngage mapsAt a special press event held at the Ministry of Sound in London this morning, Nokia introduced “Ovi” the company’s new consumer facing Internet services brand, and in doing so, took aim at Apple, its mobile carrier “partners”, and — to a lesser extent — dot com giants Google and Yahoo.

Nokia 81At launch, “Ovi”, which means ‘door’ in Finnish, will encompass the highly anticipated Nokia Music Store, a revamped N-Gage (Nokia’s mobile gaming platform — see our earlier report), as well as Nokia Maps, a navigation service that offers maps and city guides. The first version of Ovi.com, which can be accessed either directly from a compatible Nokia device or from a PC, is scheduled to go live in English during the fourth quarter of 2007, with additional features and languages added during the first half of 2008.

Nokia also announced two new N-Series phones, the N81 (music phone) and the Nokia N95 (8 GB). “The later with its large screen and higher storage capacity clearly is being launched as a way to ward off the Apple iPhone challenge”, writes Om Malik, over at GigaOm.

Additionally, the company gave a sneak preview of its next generation User Interface, dubbed the “Experience Suite”, which will be applied first to new N-Series devices. The Inquirer describes the UI as being iPhone-like, in which the user is able to “navigate between applications using one flick of the thumb”, and applications are found by “shuffling through various panes.”

Nokia to revive N-Gage for the third time

Nokia, the world’s largest cell phone manufacturer, is reviving the infamous N-Gage cell phone/game device hybrid this week, reintroducing it as a multiplayer gaming service that will work on its super-popular line of S60 smartphones (125 million sold worldwide). The service will focus first on casual gaming and will offer titles from major publishers like Electronic Arts as well as smaller indie developers that focus on the mobile gaming market.

The N-Gage was first introduced by Nokia in late 2003 to compete with portable gaming consoles from Nintendo (DS) and Sony (PlayStation Portable). Nokia, to its credit, had noticed that people were carrying both cell phones and portable game players, and the idea to merge the two into one device was born.

"Go!Messenger" – video, voice and IM chat coming to PSP

“Go!Messenger” video, voice and IM chat coming to PSPAt last week’s Games Convention in Leipzig, Sony announced more details of its soon-to-be released VoIP solution for the PlayStation Portable. “Go!Messenger”, developed in partnership with telco BT, adds video and voice calls, as well as instant messaging to the device using its built-in WiFi connection.

According to BT’s press release, the service will first launch in the UK, France, Germany, Spain and Italy this January, “before extending its reach to more than 100 countries across Europe, the Middle East and Africa.” No mention of North America, so as with Sony’s recently announced DVR solution for the PS3, U.S. customers look set to miss out.

The ultimate portable media player

1G iPod NanoThere are a vast number of portable media players on the market. They come in all different sizes, colours and configurations, each hoping to capture the greatest market share. The iPod, which has dominated the market since its launch in October 2001, is synonymous with the portable media player, in much the same way as the Walkman and the Hoover are for the personal stereo and the vacuum cleaner. Apple have maneuvered themselves into this position by being early adopters in the market (although they were by no means the first) and by innovating with their design, features and marketing.

Personally, I own a 2GB iPod Nano (1G). It is great! I use it every day and to be honest if I had to choose I would pick it over my mobile phone. However, it is starting to show its age, not just because of wear and tear, but also because of its design and technical capabilities. This got me thinking as to what features I would like in a media player, and why they’re not available yet. I’ve tried to show no bias towards Apple (or any other manufacturer) but comparisons to other media players are inevitable.

MTV, RealNetworks, and Verizon gang up on Apple and the iTMS

Viacom’s MTV Networks, RealNetworks, and Verizon Wireless announced today that they are teaming up to bring music lovers everywhere yet another digital music service, Rhapsody America, in an attempt to create a stronger competitor to Apple’s market-dominating iTunes Music Store.

The collaboration of the three companies “is like a perfect storm,” said Van Toffler, president of MTV Networks Music.
