Zatz Not Funny: Best of CES (Hulu, Slacker, Sling, Hava, Kodak and XBox 360)

A periodic roundup of relevant news from our friends at Zatz Not Funny

Hulu coming to SageTV video hardware

Dave Zatz: To this point, we haven’t really seen any easy or economical methods for getting Hulu content (back) onto the television. Most solutions require a PC in the mix – either relaying the video (ZvBox, SlingCatcher, PlayOn software) or as a PC-at-the-TV (Neuros LINK, Boxee on AppleTV). So, it was quite refreshing to swing by SageTV’s suite earlier this evening for a pre-release demo of Hulu playback direct from the compact SageTV HD Theater.

Zatz Not Funny: GPS holiday gift guide, Squeezebox, SlingPlayer on Blackberry

A periodic roundup of relevant news from our friends at Zatz Not Funny

The ZNF GPS holiday gift guide

Dave Zatz: For probably the third year in a row, most folks are coming to me not for television or media extender holiday suggestions, but looking for GPS gift-giving advice. Instead of repeatedly answering the question, and with the shopping window closing rapidly, I figured it’s time for a post.

Squeezebox updates: local radio and Amazon shopping cart

Mari Silbey: The Squeezebox I got for Christmas two years ago is the gift that keeps on giving. Logitech announced a firmware update earlier this week, and I finally got around to trying out the new features this morning.

Blackberry Slingbox client coming Soon

Dave Zatz: Sling Media has put a stake in the ground and intends to meet their goal of delivering a Blackberry SlingPlayer this year. On December 30th, the company will release a free public beta to Slingbox owners – supporting most modern GSM Blackberry models, such as the Curve and Bold.

Zatz Not Funny: Joost on TV, TiVo spam, Griffin RoadTrip review and more

A periodic roundup of relevant news from our friends at Zatz Not Funny

DivX Connected brings Joost to TV

Dave Zatz: It’s been well over a year since DivX and Joost discussed the possibility of bringing Joost content to the television. And suddenly, with no fanfare at all, a DivX Connected plug-in has appeared.

New solar laptop bag a step in the right direction, but…

Mari Silbey: Voltaic Systems has just announced a new computer bag – the Generator – designed to charge a laptop computer solely with stored energy from the sun’s rays.

Hands on with Griffin RoadTrip

Dave Zatz: Over the years, I’ve owned several iPods. And along with them, several car charging solutions and/or car mounts. They’ve run the gamut from a low-tech cup holder to higher end solutions from Monster and Belkin. But my new favorite, by a long shot, is the latest iteration of the Griffin RoadTrip.

TiVo spam machine revs engines

Dave Zatz: In case the TiVo Central banners, Now Playing List banners, Music & Photos menu banners, banners after recordings, and commercial button overlays weren’t enough, TiVo’s now pitching ads that render while programming is paused.

Zatz Not Funny: Blockbuster, CE surprises, Joost, Neuros LINK, TiVo

A periodic roundup of relevant news from our friends at Zatz Not Funny

Blockbuster OnDemand not ready for prime time

Dave Zatz: As the title states, the Blockbuster OnDemand MediaPoint 2Wire box just isn’t ready for prime time. While the pricing is extremely reasonable ($99 for the hardware, including 25 movie rentals), the interface looks pleasant, and the content selection is solid… the device is in need of a software update before I can recommend it.

CE surprises of holiday 2009

Mari Silbey: The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) hosted a webcast this afternoon with a recap on Black Friday CE spending. There was too much juicy data to report in one post, so for now I thought I’d relate some of the surprises from the holiday weekend.

Neuros LINK unboxed & setup

Dave Zatz: The primary function of Neuros LINK is to organize and access web-based video on the TV, such as Hulu or Amazon OnDemand.

Joost not dead yet, lands on iPhone

Dave Zatz: During my Dublin vacation, I caught wind of the new iPhone Joost client via Twitter. Putting the hotel’s complimentary Internet connectivity to good use, I immediately downloaded the WiFi-only app.

The week in TiVo

  • Amazon Video on Demand… in HD?
  • TiVo Series3 & TiVoHD software update
  • i.TV to add TiVo scheduling?
  • TiVo to broadcast Blip.tv?

Zatz Not Funny: Neuros, Slacker, XBox Live, VuNow and more

A periodic roundup of relevant news from our friends at Zatz Not Funny

Neuros unveils next gen hardware

Dave Zatz: Another day, another media extender. However, the new Neuros Link ($300) tackles the issue of moving web video to the television in a unique and more practical way.

Evaluating Slacker Premium

Mari Silbey: I’m a well-documented Slacker junkie, but it’s only recently that I’ve started testing Slacker’s premium service on my first gen player. The subscription cost is just high enough to make me squeamish, but a free trial can’t be ignored. And, in true Slacker form, I’m finding the latest update to my music experience addictive.

The New Xbox Experience is here

Dave Zatz: The New Xbox Experience (NXE) has finally arrived. And I imagine many will be rushing home from work to check it out tonight. Some thoughts, after living with it a few weeks

Giving up pay TV for web video?

Dave Zatz: While I know several who have indeed gone down the web video path, we’re nowhere near mass market adoption. Dumping pay television may accelerate but, for most, online content remains a supplement not a replacement. There’s just too many compromises.

VuNow launching December 15th

Dave Zatz: Hot on the heals of the Neuros Link unveiling, Verismo announces their VuNow video-to-the-TV solution will be available December 15th.

Zatz Not Funny: TiVo, Flip MinoHD, CES Unveiled and more

A periodic roundup of relevant news from our friends at Zatz Not Funny (one of my all time favorite blogs)…

Flip goes HD, adds FlipShare software

Mari Silbey: Pure Digital unveiled its anticipated Flip MinoHD today packaged with new FlipShare software for editing and sharing… One of the issues with the Flip camcorders to date has been keeping a sharp focus for close-up shots. According to a Flip spokesperson, the MinoHD doesn’t necessary solve that problem, with the minimum focus range staying at 80 cm. However, it’s likely not a significant concern for casual users, particularly with the new HD resolution.

(Ed. I looked at purchasing a Flip but after reading multiple reviews I’ve plunged for the more expensive Sanyo HD800 – review coming soon).

Dave dumps XM (again)

Dave Zatz: See ya, XM. I was on the fence and you pushed. Our time together has been mostly positive, but the massive lineup modifications yesterday without any advance notification isn’t the proper way to treat your customers. So I’m walking.
