This article is correct is asserting that this is not the first film to be distributed digitally on iTunes. In addition to the other movies in the July article reporting small film distribution, I found an article on http://www.contentinople.com which reported that Wes Anderson is making his 13-minute short film Hotel Chevalier available today for a free download. This is in promotion for a larger upcoming film of his Darjeeling Limited.
I think part of the hype about this Ed Burns film is that it is exclusive for four weeks only on iTunes and I haven't heard of any other movies including the Wes Anderson doing that, although it just may not be reported. In addition Ed Burns and his cast are well-known so that also may contribute to the hype.
